Classical Spanish Guitar

Personal History and Experience; Eric Anthony

I began my study of music and the guitar at age sixteen with CarlosReyes,a student of the Paraguayan guitarist-composer Augustin Barrios,in Oakland,California. After high school, serious study was interruptedby the Viet-Namwar where I served in the Marine Corps, earning two purplehearts and adiploma in Vietnamese Language from the Monterey Defense LanguageInstitute.

After my release from service, I attended the University of New MexicowhereI studied guitar with Hector Garcia for two years. Due to the politicalturmoilof the time and my own increasing desire to play professionally,I leftthe University before completing my degree, and began playing classicalguitarfull-time in an Albuquerque restaurant.

After two very enjoyable years of professional performing, I again became

eager to resume study of my instrument, and so moved to Spain. I studiedwithNarciso Yepes in Madrid and later in Paris.

In 1975 I left Spain with the idea of finishing my formal music education.Icompleted my degree in Guitar Performance at the New England Conservatoryin1980.

In 1981 I was chosen to represent this country in a concert series inSpainand given a Cultural Exchange Grant --- by joint agreement of theUnitedStates and Spanish Embassies.

In the Boston area, in addition to teaching guitar, I have been activeasa soloist, giving performances for the City of Boston (Mayor's OfficeofCultural Affairs); Harvard University (Peabody Museum, Arnold Arboretum);theSpanish Consulate (Museum of Fine Arts concert); the Spanish SherryAssociation;the Spanish

Ministry of Foreign Affairs (a commissioned concert at the Museum ofFineArts). I play regularly at the Harvard Club of Boston.
