Classical Spanish Guitar

Personal History and Experience; Eric Anthony

I began my study of music and the guitar at age sixteen with Carlos Reyes, a student of the Paraguayan guitarist-composer Augustin Barrios, in Oakland, California. After high school, serious study was interrupted by the Viet-Nam war where I served in the Marine Corps, earning two purple hearts and a diploma in Vietnamese Language from the Monterey Defense Language Institute.

After my release from service, I attended the University of New Mexico where I studied guitar with Hector Garcia for two years. Due to the political turmoil of the time and my own increasing desire to play professionally, I left the University before completing my degree, and began playing classical guitar full-time in an Albuquerque restaurant.

After two very enjoyable years of professional performing, I again became eager to resume study of my instrument, and so moved to Spain. I studied with Narciso Yepes in Madrid and later in Paris.

In 1975 I left Spain with the idea of finishing my formal music education.  I completed my degree in Guitar Performance at the New England Conservatory in 1980.

In 1981 I was chosen to represent this country in a concert series in Spain and given a Cultural Exchange Grant --- by joint agreement of the United States and Spanish Embassies.

In the Boston area, in addition to teaching guitar, I have been active as a soloist, giving performances for the City of Boston (Mayor's Office of Cultural Affairs); Harvard University (Peabody Museum, Arnold Arboretum);  the Spanish Consulate (Museum of Fine Arts concert); the Spanish Sherry Association;  the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs (a commissioned concert at the Museum of Fine Arts). I play regularly at the Harvard Club of Boston.

I have also performed in conjunction with Ramon De Los Reyes (flamenco) Dance Company (Berkley Performance Center, New England Life Hall)", the New England Conservatory Chamber Singers (Lute songs at Faneuil Hall);  featured soloist with the New Life Symphony Orchestra (Lisa Taillacq, conducting);  and have given numerous recitals with my wife, Patricia G. Anthony, flutist (as the Anthony Duo).
