WINE OF THE MONTH

Conde de Valdemar, Fermentado en Barrica, 1995
By : Dan McMyler

This wine, another winner from the Martinez Bujanda family owned winery in Rioja is produced from single vineyard Viura grapes grown in the Rioja Alavesa region. The Viura grape is the best-known white wine grape in Spain made famous by the white wines of Rueda. Because the vineyard is elevated above the Ebro River on a hillside it enjoys moderate summer temperatures with cool evenings making for perfect growing conditions of high quality fruit. The wine is Barrel Fermented for six months, which makes for a good structure and pale yellow color. Fresh in the nose with honeyed fruit and floral tones this is a terrific seafood wine. There exists a delicate balance between acidity and oak complexity but the fresh fruit dominates the personality of this fine wine priced at about $10.00 in the store.
